This turntable has a fully automatic Start/Stop operation (with the mechanism completely disengaged and decoupled during the entire running time of the record).
When you press Start, the automation mechanism is engaged, and the tonearm is automatically moved to the lead-in groove of the record. Once the record is playing, the mechanism is completely disengaged: This means it will not affect the playback quality, or the free movement of the tonearm and platter in any way.
And because the automation is working entirely mechanically — with no additional electronics needed — it does not influence or degrade the sound quality.
In typical Pro-Ject fashion, the motor is electronically controlled for the most accurate and stable playback speeds. You can easily switch between 33RPM and 45 RPM with the push of a button.
The built-in phono preamp makes the A1 incredibly versatile and allows you to connect it directly to any input on your amplifier or to a pair of active loudspeakers. The phono preamp can also be switched off, which allows you to use your own phono preamp or your amplifier's phono input.
The A1 features an 8.3-inch, ultra-light-mass aluminum tonearm, and it comes with an Ortofon OM10 phono cartridge, installed and aligned at the factory. The tracking force and anti-skating are also factory pre-adjusted, which means that the A1 is "plug & play."

Carbon Fiber Reinforced, Non-magnetic Headshell
The Automat A1 headshell is a completely new design. It is made from a carbon fiber reinforced polymer, which makes it super stable and rigid, all while keeping the weight ideal to work perfectly with the ultra-light-mass tonearm design. The polymer/carbon composite material also results in excellent internal damping of resonances.
Heavy MDF Chassis
The chassis consists of a console made out of 8-millimeter-thick MDF panels. The automation mechanism, platter bearing, and tonearm are mounted on a solid thick MDF base plate.
The Pro-Ject design team ensured that hollow areas were avoided wherever possible, with just enough space to precision-fit the inner workings of the A1. The heavy mass of the chassis reduces unwanted resonances, and it decouples the A1 from outside influences.
Damped Aluminum Platter
The aluminum platter is 100% made in Germany. In three operations, it is stamped, bent, and perforated. Additionally, a damping ring is added on the inside to increase weight and reduce resonances. The platter is precision-balanced to minimize Wow and Flutter deviations. Finally, it is given a smooth paint job, adding to the stylish, clean look of the A1.
Phono Cable with Gold-Plated Connectors
The A1 comes with the Connect it E phono cable. This is a semi-balanced, low-capacitance cable, with superior shielding. Compared to other digital and analog music sources, the signal coming from a turntable cartridge is very fragile in nature, and cheap, poorly made RCA cables often do not provide the ideal conditions for getting a phono signal to an amplifier. The Connect it E is purpose-designed for this exact application.
Meticulously Designed Feet with Silicon Damping
The A1 feet are engineered to effectively decouple the turntable from the surface it is placed on, using an internal silicon damping layer. This is an essential feature for every good turntable, as it acts as yet another mechanism to ensure your vinyl playback is not influenced by outside interference and resonances.
Handmade in Germany
The A1 is fully handmade in Germany. It is 100% assembled and adjusted by some of the best technicians in the industry. Virtually all the individual components of the A1 are produced in Germany — in the factory and its immediate vicinity. This entire region is rich in the turntable-manufacturing tradition, which leads to stellar quality.
