Traditional planar magnetic speakers are designed with conductive traces (voice coil) spread across the surface of a thin diaphragm. This diaphragm is in turn held in an even magnetic field by strong neodymium magnets. When current flows through the voice coil, the magnetic field causes the diaphragm to vibrate. Audeze's research in fundamental driver design improves the basic planar technology with several proprietary materials and process techniques that deliver remarkable improvements.

Most planar-magnetic speakers use Mylar (PET) diaphragm with aluminum traces. Audeze transducers use new materials that offer substantial improvements for both diaphragm and traces. Audeze's proprietary Lotus diaphragm is capable of handling maximum continuous operating temperatures of over 400° F. This gives the drivers a smooth, resonance-free frequency response, excellent internal damping, edge damping, very low distortion and extremely fast transient response. In addition, the Audeze transducers are very versatile and efficient, so they pair well with a wide variety of amplifiers.
