Ben Webster Quintet Soulville Vinyl LP

Soulville is quintessential Ben Webster: intimate, tender and endlessly expressive. It's one of the pre-eminent audiophile jazz recordings of all time and one in a string of classic albums recorded by Webster for the Verve label during the ‘50s. Although he was internationally recognized as one of jazz's elder statesman when he recorded this album in 1957, the youthful fire that had marked his playing with the Duke Ellington Orchestra two decades earlier was clearly undiminished. The tenor saxophone giant leads a stellar combo of Ray Brown (bass), Herb Ellis (guitar), Oscar Peterson (piano) and Stan Levey (drums) flawlessly through two bluesy self-penned tracks and five skillfully rendered ballads, including an exquisite “Where Are You.”

Musicians:

Ben Webster (tenor saxophone)
Ray Brown (bass)
Herb Ellis (guitar)
Oscar Peterson (piano)
Stan Levey (drums)
