Unquestionably one of the greatest American rock bands of all time, Creedence Clearwater Revival will best be remembered for their unique bayou sound popularized in songs like "Proud Mary" and "Green River." Their golden era of hit singles (fall of 1968 through spring of 1972) rivals that of any band in rock 'n' roll history. Although their music evoked the raw, gospel-tinged sound of the rural South, John and Tom Fogerty, Doug Clifford and Stu Cook actually hailed from El Cerrito, California, a small town near Berkeley.
The 1968 release of the band's debut self-titled album Creedence Clearwater Revival paralleled the flowering of the San Francisco music scene, but the CCR phenomenon had little in common with the "San Francisco Sound." That first LP contained rock and blues standards such as Dale Hawkins's "Susie Q" and Screamin' Jay Hawkins' "I Put a Spell on You," (both of which became immediate hits) as well as original material by John Fogerty, who was to emerge as one of rock's most omnipresent hitmaking songwriters in the years that followed.
"I used to say in 1968 that I wanted to make records they would still play on the radio in ten years," John Fogerty said in early 1993, on the eve of Creedence Clearwater Revival's induction into the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame. Over 45 years later, CCR's music still sounds as fresh and vital as ever
