Love Love 150g Vinyl LP

The May, 1966 debut from this legendary L.A. group bristles with energy; includes their punky hit cover of Hal David / Burt Bacharach’s "My Little Red Book" and Arthur Lee’s harrowing "Signed D.C.

In 1966, Love were not the Love they would become on Forever Changes, or even their second record, Da Capo. Here, Arthur Lee & co. were basically a garage band along the lines of The Seeds, with influences of folk (Bob Dylan) and folk rock (The Byrds). The darkness is already rearing its head, though, in kiss-offs like "Can't Explain" (not The Who song) and the frenetic "My Flash on You," as well as the dour, wistful "Softly to Me" and the slow, soulful anti-drug anthem "Signed D.C." (about their first drummer, Don Conka, who had left the group).

On top of this, Love's cover of "Hey Joe" predates the one made famous by The Jimi Hendrix Experience, this version being an all-out rave-up and strikingly different from Jimi's. And of course their cover of Bacharach and David's "My Little Red Book," while greatly simplified from the original composition, is pretty sublime.
