Ray Charles At Newport on 180g Import LP

This rolling 8-song set recorded at The Newport Jazz Festival in Newport, Rhode Island on July 5, 1958 and engineered by Tom Dowd finds music icon Ray Charles at the onset of his brilliant career on vocals, piano and alto saxophone running down the likes of "I Got A Woman," "The Right Time," and "Talkin' 'Bout You" with a smokin' band featuring Bennie Crawford (bariton saxophone), David Newman (tenor saxophone), Lee Harper/Marcus Belgrave (trumpet), Edgar Wills (bass), Richie Goldberg (drums) and the Raylettes (backing vocals). The detailed liner notes on the album were written by Kenneth Lee Karpe.

"It is evident from the applause that Ray Charles was well received. But strangely enough, a large part of the audience had probably never heard him before. This is because the phenomenal acclaim he has received in the jazz world has all been within the space of less than one year...Ray tells us in his introduction to his last selection that "everybody can understand the blues." And then with his characteristic eloquence, he proves it." - Kenneth Lee Karpe
