The Staple Singers - Hammer And Nails on 180g LP
The Staple Singers Hammer And Nails on 180g LP
During a recording career that spanned four decades, the Staple Singers moved from performing purely religious material to protest songs in sync with the Civil Rights Movement to chart-topping pop and R&B hits. The switch from the “soul-folk” style associated with their protest period to the more secular sounds of such smashes as “Respect Yourself” and “I’ll Take You There” occurred during the Chicago-based quartet’s 1968-75 tenure at Stax Records.
The Staple Singers classic 1962 Riverside album Hammer And Nails showcases the group in their absolute Southern gospel prime on such moving numbers as the title track, “Gloryland” and “Nobody Knows The Trouble I’ve Seen.” The Staple Singers would go on to soul stardom when they signed with Stax Records later in the decade, but Hammer And Nails captures the group doing what they do best - gospel. Reissued on 180 gram vinyl by 4 Men With Beards.
